Welcome to the Frequently Asked
Questions page.
I will pre-populate this page with what I
assume will be oft-asked questions. As this site is built-out and (hopefully)
becomes a favorite destination for consumers of high quality stock images, I
will keep this page updated with answers to actual questions that are, well you
know, asked frequently.
In the mean time, let's pretend that these
questions are asked frequently until you all prove me wrong!
Can you tell us a little about yourself
and your background?
Do you alter or
manipulate your images in any way?
What resolution are your images?
Is the copyright information printed in the
purchased print or licensed image?
Do you accept assignments?
What is your favorite type of picture?
Are your images available in Black and
White?
Can I download images on your WEB site?
How come you don't have
more images?
Can you tell us a little about yourself
and your background?
Well sure, and thanks for asking. I remember getting a "science" kit in the mail
as a result of a birthday present. One of the "science" projects was building a
demonstration darkroom. That was back in the day when they would ship grade
school kids all manner of toxic chemicals without so much as a casual
conversation with the legal department! Good times. So anyway, the distinction
between science and magic was utterly lost on me in those days, and still is to
be honest about it, but I remember feeling that I was in the presence of actual
magic when I saw my first image appear on a piece of photographic paper. The
image slowly emerging on the formally empty white paper under the eerie red
glow of my "safe-light" in the bathroom I commandeered (towels jammed under the
locked door, chemical trays and stuff on the counter and toilet seat) just added
to the mystique. I've been a devotee of that magic ever since.
During my high school years, my growing
passion was aided and abetted by a wonderfully generous teacher who was also in
love with the latent image. Bruce Burgess is no longer with us, but I am deeply
indebted to his guidance and generosity. From high school I attended Brooks
Institute of Professional Photography and achieved my BA in Advertising
Illustration. After pursuing a career as a product illustrator for several years
I married and discovered (to my dismay), that I was not making enough money to
support my new and growing family.
I currently make my living as the Director
of IT for a medical technology company. I've told people for years that my first
and last career would be the same. Although I am not ready to resume my passion
for photography as a full time career (college tuitions and stuff), I am ready
to begin the transition back into the photography business. This WEB site is
that beginning.
Do
you alter or manipulate your images in any way?
Sometimes. My view is that these are photographic illustrations, not photo
documentation or photojournalism. I do challenge you to distinguish an image
that has been manipulated from one that hasn't. If you can, the image isn't
succeeding the way I want it to.
What
resolution are your images?
What resolution do you want them to be? Seriously, these images have either been
shot on 35mm or medium format film and loving scanned with the
Heidelberg Tango Drum Scanner,
or they were shot digitally with professional gear. Most of my stuff is Canon
gear. If you request a 300 dpi image for a full page or magazine cover, and the
picture in question is a small crop of the original image, I'll let you know at
the time of the inquiry. I cases where there is any question about image
quality, I will be happy to work with you to address those concerns before money
changes hands.
Is
the copyright information included in the purchased print or licensed image?
No.
Do
you accept assignments?
Not presently. That may change, but for now my first loyalty is to my current
employer. They keep me very busy.
What
is your favorite type of picture?
Good ones! My background is in studio advertising photography where every
element is tightly controlled. I don't shoot in the studio anymore, but I am
still something of a control freak. I stalk my images; I don't stumble across
them (well sometimes I get lucky). I will often set out to capture an image with
considerable planning of things such as time-of-day, time-of-year, perspective,
lighting, etc. I probably shoot with a tripod more often than most because I
have planned the image in advance. I'm afraid I still think like an illustrator
sometimes...did I leave room for copy, did I get a vertical shot, and will this
image print well? My galleries cover subject areas that have always appealed to me.
One area I am particularly interested in is night photography.
Are
your images available in Black and White?
Yes. The pricing is the same.
Can
I download images on your WEB site?
Under certain conditions, yes. If
you are an art director, or part of the marketing team, and wish to use one of
my WEB images for a project mock-up, go for it. Please come back and buy the
image license when the project gets the green light. You must include my
copyright information on all downloads until you have purchased a license. You
may not re-publish my images electronically or in print without written approval
by me.
How
come you don't have more images?
That's a fair question. I am still adding a backlog of images to this WEB
site. Soon there will be hundreds of images to browse. Yes, I know that many
stock sites have tens of thousands of images, but I just don't have that many
good ones. I will specifically be adding images to the gallery themes I have
mapped out. If those themes interest you please check back from time to time for
more images. Drop me a line to let me know about specific image content you
would like to see.
